Comparison between Deborah Sampson and Ponyboy

Most women in the 1700s clean, cook, and take care of their family. However, the main character in "Soldier's Secret", Deborah Sampson, is not like most women. She didn't get an ordinary life like most women. She got a life she didn't ask for. What she wanted she didn't get at all; instead she got a life full of adventure, pain, and journeys.

In this book, Deborah has to make sacrifices just like the boy in the book "The Outsides" named Ponyboy. They both are very similar. Some examples are they both have to make sacrifices that affect them and the people around them very much. They both have to make life or death decisions that most people don't have to make at such a young age. Lastly they both don't really have a family. They both have to do things for them self and be very independent as a young adult.

I personally believe that there are more differences then similarities. One of the main differences is that Ponyboy is a boy and Deborah is a girl that disguises herself as a man. Also, their ages are very different because Ponyboy is about 14 and Deborah is about 18 so there is a big age difference. Deborah Sampson signed up for the war and fought for her country and in "The Outsiders" Ponyboy obviously doesn't go into the war!

There are so many similarities and differences between these two books that makes the book unique in its own way. It makes the book especially good for other readers. I think that both Deborah from the book "Soldier's Secret" and Ponyboy from the book "The Outsiders" are amazing characters in both of these books that are special in their own way.

Text Structure Response

In the book Soldier's Secret Deb who is servant for a family and loves watching the men training for the war outside her bedroom window. It always interested her on what it was like to be a man so when she finds Sam's old breeches she decides to try them on. When she tried them on they were the most comfortable pieces of clothing she has ever worn and she never wants to take them off. It is this moment where Deborah decides she wants to see what it was like to be a man and she wants to join the war.

One day when she was watching the men outside she decided to put the breeches on and practice like they do. She was amazing at it and thought that God was telling her something... God was telling her to disguise has a man and join the army to fight in the war. She tries signing up for the war but when someone recognizes the way she writes she has to make a run for it, so she decides to walk to Boston and sign up for the war there. She got to Boston, signed up, and began training for 2 weeks. After that there is no turning back. She finds that once she is in training she made a huge mistake and wishes she hadn't signed up for anything. She faints while marching, makes best friends that she wishes she could tell them that she was a woman, and falls in love with a man who knows she is a man but has second guesses by the way Deb acts. She regrets many things like signing up for the war and lying to everyone but she also has wishes. Her number one wish is to tell her love that she is a woman...

A College Drop Out

I had a dream when I was 12 that I was performing on Broadway. I was dancing and singing in a play and everyone was cheering for me. Every since that day I have wanted to perform on Broadway. In high school I would perform in school plays and sing in choir but it was never like my dream. My parents want me to grow up and be a lawyer because that is what they are but that is not my dream that is their dream for me.

Yesterday I dropped out of college but I have not told my parents yet... I am too scared. If they ever knew that I dropped out they would never talk to me again. Instead of driving home to my parents I decided to drive to New York for a couple days. It is only about an hour drive from my house. I think maybe going to New York I can see some performances and try-out for one or two.

I had to call my mom and let her know where I was and when I would be home. I told her I was staying on campus studying with a friend form my class and I would come home in 3 days... So that gives my 3 days so figure out something in New York. I am trying out for one play today and I think I might make one of the main parts because my competition isn't hard.

Point of View

Authors Note: In the book Soldier’s Secret, Deborah Sampson is the main character and she talks about her life and what happened to her. I always wonder it was like to be her best friend, Jennie, who is a slave at a house nearby were Deb works. Jennie always says how lucky Deb is that she is not a slave but you never get to hear Jennie’s point of view or her life.

I work in a big house as a slave. I get pushed around and beaten but I can’t do anything about it. I don’t know how to read or write or do anything so my best friend Deb wants to teach me. I don’t know if I really want her to teach me because if my master sees me knowing how to read or write he will know that I sneak away during lunch time. Deb is so sure that he won’t find out by I’m not sure she knows what she is talking about. I meet her in the woods every day during lunch time because my master never sees me or knows that I leave the house. Deb brings a book to the woods every day tries to teach me. I told her I am scared that my master will find out by she says her won’t so she teaches me anyways. Deb is very demanding and thinks she always right so I can’t say no to her… I’m too scared to.

One day Deb came up to me and told me a secret about how she watches the soldiers train in the morning, then practices what they do in her room. She also told me that she found Sam’s old breaches and that she put them on and she wondered what is was like to be a man. How you go treated compared to a woman? How much fun it is was to be free! She said that she put her hair put and went to town to see if anyone would notice her or if they would treat her differently. No one noticed her! I told her not to keep going out disguised but she didn’t listen and did it anyway. I don’t agree with what she is doing because it could get her killed… I told her that but she doesn’t thing anyone will notice her so she ignores me and what I say. I haven’t met her in the woods for a couple days so I don’t know if anything has happened to her. It scares me that I haven’t seen her because something could have happen like her be killed, get in trouble and be in jail or the worse one of all… have to go to war!

Creative Story!

"Are you crazy, it's four o'clock in the morning!" I screamed.
"No I am not crazy, you just need to get up so when can catch our plane to Florida!" My mother exclaimed.
"Okay" I said quietly.

I got up to get ready and help my parents pack up to the car. My little sister was still sleeping because my parents let her sleep but not me I guess. We packed up the car, woke up my sister and left for the airport. We got to the airport checked in, got on our plane and left for our family vacation to Orlando, Florida.

We got to Florida and went to our hotel. It was the biggest hotel I have ever been in! It had the biggest pool, the biggest rooms, and the best arcade.

The difference between a good family and a bad family

Family is a very important thing in my life as it should be, but for people in the book The Outsiders family isn't an important thing. Some people don't have parents, some people have parents that abuse them and others have parents that won't say no and let them do whatever they want until something bad happens. Sometimes I wonder if I didn't have good parents what would happen to me and what I would do. Maybe the children in "The Outsiders" wonder the same thing but they wonder what if they had parents. Family is so important that it they change a persons live and sometimes it can be in a good way or a bad way!

Family can change a person. It can change the way they think, the way the look at life, and a big way they can change a person is the way they act. Bob in The Outsiders has very nice and kind parents but they are so kind and love Bob so much they never say no just to let him do what he wants. Sometimes that could be fun but in Bob's case he tries to do whatever he can to make them say no. He gets drunk, beats up the greaser, and tries anything that he think his parents would finally get mad at him and say no once in a while but that never happens. Well trying to get in trouble something terrible ends up happening and Bob dies. If Bob's parents would have said no to him once in a while and had some rules that would have made Bob a better person and he might not be dead.

Bob's parents always said yes and it hurt them and him in the long run but for Dallas he never had a no or a yes. Dallas was older then most of the others in the gang and he was also the bad one out of them. He never had any parents to influence him to do the right thing. Every since he was little he has been bad and always stole things from gas stations because he doesn’t have anything else. Dallas having no parents reminds me of Harry Potter because he also didn't have any parents to influence him to do the right thing and to help him threw out life.

All parents are different in their own way. Some parents are very nice in fact to nice that they never say no and that can eventually hurt their child. Other parents are so mean and abusive of their child and it messes them up forever. Then there are children that don't have any parents and either live by themselves or have to go into foster care. Many parents are different and try to either help their child or they don't really care. Parents have a big influence of their children and some parents don't realize it and make a big mistake that ruins their children's lives.

Ponyboy-- "The Outsiders"

Author's Note: The purpose of this piece is to summarize the character Ponyboy in the book "The Outsiders" but also show my opinion. I would like feedback on if I showed enough opinion or if I didn't!

In the book "The Outsiders" Ponyboy is a 14 year old boy who lives with is two older brothers Darry and Sodapop because his parents died in an accident. He is very poor and is called a greaser because of it. He is very smart and stays in school unlike everyone else in his gang that dropped out including his brothers. After Darry hits Ponyboy and Johnny kills a soc Ponyboy realizes that Darry is so strict because he wants him to be successful unlike him and Sodapop. In my opinion Ponyboy is misjudged because he is poor and doesn't live on the West side by the smart people. Everyone thinks that because he is a greaser which I don't think it true because he is very smart and nice and never likes to get into fights or steal anything. He is a good kid and no one knows he is except for his gang!

Casey at the Bat!

Dear Casey,
I read your story “Casey at the Bat” and I really enjoyed reading it. When the first two people struck out before you and it was up to you to try to win the game you could relate to the determination that you had and also the confidence that you felt when stepping up to the plate. After your first to strikes everyone was nervous but when your reading the story you think differently like you know what will happen and you try to predict the end. Well when I tried to predict the end I was completely wrong. When you swung and missed for the third time and was out I thought about the story and what had happened throughout it. I was very confused but after talking through it I finally got it. I really liked the short story “Casey at the Bat” and want to read more by the author Ernest Thayer.

Eating Vegetables!

Do you like vegetables? Vegetables are very good for you and they are an important part of a good diet! Most people don’t like them and I would agree with them for some of the vegetables but not all of them. I do not like carrots, corn out of a can. There are a lot of vegetables I like thought. Most people don’t like vegetables and I don’t know why all I can say is if you have never tried them because they look gross, they aren’t that bad!
There are many reasons why people eat vegetables. One of the main reasons why people eat vegetable is because they are very good for you and helps in diets. Another reasons is that they are good. I don’t think that vegetables are that good. I don’t like to eat them unless I have for dinner. The only time I will eat vegetables is if they are green peppers. There are many good reasons why people eat vegetables but I think they are some good reasons why people don’t either.
Even though a lot of people like vegetables there are many reasons why people don’t like them. Most people don’t like them because they look gross. Well I think even if they look gross everyone has to try them. Another reason why people don’t like vegetables is because they think they are gross. Sometimes I think that they are gross but as I got older it thought that they were better.
People all around the world like or don’t like them but either way you should eat them because they are very good for you and can make you very healthy. If you really won’t eat them, then you need to find another way to get them but drinking veggie juice. Vegetables are very good sometimes I think but others they are not!

Anna Stone--- Creative Piece

Anna Stone was a 13 year old girl with a dream of becoming a professional soccer player. She lived in a small town in Colorado by the mountains. She played for a very expensive team even though it was hard for her parents to pay for. She was fast and had a big, hard kick that no one could stop. Every game she played she had at least 1 goal until on March 3 she was beat up by a team that she beat by scoring the winning goal. They hit her with bats and broke her legs and many ribs. Anna was rushed to the hospital. The bones in her legs were shattered and she had to go into surgery. She woke up with her parents holding her hand and crying, she looked down and she didn't have any legs.

Anna stared balling,
"Why did this have to happen to me?" She cried.
"I don't know Anna, I'm so sorry!" Her mom said.

For the next 2 weeks she sat in the hospital watching T.V. Playing soccer meant everything to her and now she can't play anymore! When Anna left the hospital and went home she didn't like the feeling of everyone looking at her in the wheel chair with no legs. A week later when she went to school her friends didn't want to be her friends anymore. Everyone would make fun of her and worst of all she couldn't play soccer in gym class or out at recess when everyone would always want to be on her team! Instead on being popular because she was so good at soccer now she has no friends.

Anna came home crying after her first day back.
"Anna whats wrong?" Her mom said.
"I don't have any friends anymore!"
"Yes you do, Megan and Kelly?"
"Not anymore. They don't want a friend with no legs!"
"Anna everything will be alright"
"No mom it won't! No one will talk to me"

After going to school for a week and coming home crying and sad Anna's mom decided to home school her! For the first 2 weeks Anna liked it better but after a couple more days she missed her friends but she didn't think here friends would miss her!

One day Anna was at the table reading when the doorbell rang! She went to answer it and it was her old friends from school.

"What are you guys doing here?" Anna said.
"You have to come back to school Anna!" said her friends.
"Why would I go somewhere were I am not happy and no one wants me?"
"Everyone misses you Anna but mostly we miss you!"
"Why were you so mean to me?"
"Because we didn't know what to do when our best friend lost her legs... what would you do?"
"I wouldn't ignore and make fun of them!"
"We are so sorry Anna and we just want you to come back to school!"
"Are you guys going to be nice to me and talk to me?"
"Of course!!"
"Will you stick up for me when people make fun of me!"
"Always!"
"And will you treat me like I had legs and don't treat me differently then before?"
"We were planning on that!'
"Ok I will come back to school!"
"GREAT!"
Anna's friends hugged her then left. Anna went into the house called her mom and told her everything! Anna and her mom were so excited. Anna's mom called the school and they excepted everything. The next week Anna went to school and it was perfect, to her it felt like she never left because every single person in the school treated her the same way as before... except at recess of course!!!

The End!

Vacations

I love going on vacations because you get to go somewhere you don't go very often and you get to experience things that you normally don't do where you live. Over the summer this year I am going to Las Vegas and Florida. I get to go to Las Vegas because my brother, Mike, is in the Air Force and is stationed there so it will be my second time going there to visit him, his wife, Trena, and my nephew, Liam! I am also going to Florida to visit my grandparents. My mom and dad's parents both live in Florida so unless we go there we don't see them very often. The last time I went to Florida was with my friend Jessie. We had so much fun swimming with dolphins, para-sailing, going for a bike ride and it started to rain, skim boarding, body boarding, swimming, and much more. I love summer and vacations but I don't get to go on vacations very often so when I do I have so much fun and I get to do many things!

Soccer

Soccer is a very fun sport that a lot of people world wide play. I play soccer too with my friends. It is a lot of fun most of the time unless he talks for a while. My coach is really nice and he doesn't yell that much! It is fun at practices when we get to play games which is a lot because he believes it helps us improve when we play against different people. Games are the best part about every sport especially soccer because our team is good and we are all friends so if we score its so fun and if we mess up everyone laughs. I love soccer and sports in general but I like soccer more then others because I am always with my friends and having fun!

Spring Break

I am really excited for spring break this year. I love doing nothing for one week, it is so fun! Everyone is going on vacation except for me. For soccer we have a game over spring break and there isn't going to be a lot of people they so we will probably lose. Next week I am going to just hang out with my friends that aren't going on vacation like Abby Gerrits. I love spring break so much because you can do nothing all week but it is also fun when you can hang out with friends the whole time!

Justin Bieber playing soccer!!

I love soccer. It is one of the sports EVER! I have been playing soccer for a long time and when I was little is was my favorite sport. Now Justin Bieber is playing soccer and it is funny because I love soccer and Justin Bieber! Soccer is a really fun sport to play, I think more people that don't like it should try it because once you start playing you can't stop!

The Hundredth Dove Alternate Ending!

There are many good short stories to read but I really liked the short story “The Hundredth Dove” by Jane Yolen. It has a very good purpose and ending but I think it should have ended a little differently. Even though I love the ending of this short story, if you would change it just a little bit it would be more interesting and more people would read it because everyone loves a happy ending.
At the end of the story the hunter twist the dove’s neck and then goes to the king to give him ninety-nine alive dove’s and one dead. I think this story has a great purpose and then ending is very good but I wish it would have been happier and enjoying for the reader to end on. By just changing little things in the story and by making the ending a little more enjoying more people will want to read this amazing short story.
Even though this short story is really good I wish it would end more interesting. Finally the hunter captures the hundredth dove! The one he could never catch he had in his arm. One arm around the dove and one had holding the dove’s neck. The dove could not move at all. The dove knew the hunter was not letting go so the dove spoke to the hunter.
“Master fowler set me free, gold and silver I’ll give thee”
But the hunter wasn’t going to fall for the dove’s little tricks.
“Master fowler set me free, fame and fortune follow thee”
Again the hunter was not going to fall for anything. The dove spoke for the third time.
“Master fowler fee this dove, the queen will be your won true love”
Then the hunter knew that this perfect, white dove was the queen. He set her free seeing if she really was the queen. The dove flew off and the hunter knew it was too good to be true. He sat there for about five minutes just thinking about what he was going to tell the King about how he failed him, but just then the queen showed up and became the hunters true love like she promised. The next day the hunter went up to the King.
“I have failed you.” Said the hunter “ you asked me for one hundred doves and I only brought you ninety-nine dove’s”
The King started crying.
“It is okay that you have failed me this once, the queen isn’t even going to show up”
After that the hunter told the King that he didn’t want to be a hunter anymore and he went home to his true love. They lived happily ever after.
Now I think that is a happy ending for the hunter. Just by changing a good, sad ending to a good, happy ending more people will want to read this short story. Some people do like sad endings but I don’t because if I am going to read a story I want it to end on a good note!

Mr. Burger

Last quarter we had Mr. Burger come in and he helped out in our gym class to see what it was like if he became a gym teacher! Everyone liked Mr. Burger he was really fun and when we had health days and then went in the gym for a little bit for fun he would always play basketball or something with us! It was always really fun when he was here and now we have someone else that is in our gym class and Mr. Burger left! Everyone misses Mr. Burger and we want him to come back. I really like gym class because we always play games but it was more fun when Mr. Burger was there with us!

Personal Metaphors

I am a basketball player running up and down a court

I am a soccer player running all around

I am a volleyball player who's arms get all red and hurt

I am a reader but I only read history

This is a personal metaphor poem about myself.

The Clique

Have you ever moved somewhere new and had to meet new people? Claire moved from Orlando, Florida to Westchester, New York and it seems like a whole new planet to her. Claire moved into a guest house of one of Claire’s dad’s friend. Claire and I are very alike in many ways but there is one big difference!

There are many ways that I am alike and different compared to Claire. One thing that we are alike is that we are the same age. I don’t think that when you’re in 7th grade it is that hard to make new friends but for Claire it was. Another obvious way that we are alike is that we both moved from a smaller place to a bigger place. When Claire moved she moved into a guest house and didn’t make friends with the girl that lived there it was harder for her.

Even though Claire and I are very alike we are also different. There is one main difference between us. The big difference is that it was really hard for Claire to make friends, for me I tried out for a soccer team and when I made it everyone was really nice to me and that’s how I decided what school to go to! One other difference is that we don’t live in the same place. Claire lives in a big city, state because she lives in New York! I don’t live in a state that big!

When you find out you are moving normally you are very sad! I know when I found out I was really sad and scared. Once you meet people though, they are really nice! Now I don’t ever want to move from Pewaukee. Claire doesn’t get along with the girls in New York at first but by the end of the book they see that Claire is really nice and then they all want to be her friend. Moving get seem sad and scary and it is but once you make friends you find out it’s not that hard but can be a little scary at times!

Wisconsin Dells

Last weekend I went to the Wisconsin Dells with my family and stayed at the Wilderness. I only reason I went was because my basketball had a tournament there. Every year all the select teams go to a tournament called Just a Game in the Wisconsin Dells. The past years that I have gone to the Dells for this tournament we have stayed at the Rome Hotel. It was really fun there but I think that the water parks are better at the Wilderness because they have 3 of them and the Rome Hotel only had 1! The best ride at the Wilderness is the Hurricane! It looks really high and scary so I didn't want to go one it because I am afraid of heights. All on my friends wanted me to go on it so I went! When got to the top we had to go on a scale to make sure we didn't way to much, and we didn't. We went down screaming when we got into the part where u go up the sides in a circle almost we got of track and flew in the air! When we came down I smacked my back on the bottom of the ride! It hurt really badly but it was really fun and I can't wait until I go back to the Wisconsin Dells again!

Favortie Childhood Memory!

What is your favorite childhood memory? I remember mine was when my old school's high school basketball team went to state in Madison! It was very exciting for everyone. My whole family bought tickets and stayed in a hotel with a bunch of other people including the team! The day of the game the team left the hotel! Everyone got ready for the game. We were all wearing blue and gold!! All of the girls that I was with from my grade and older were painting our faces, half blue and have gold. We were also all wearing the same shirts that had all of the team on the back of the shirt.

When we got to the game the high school students had us come sit by them to cheer on the Warriors!! The game was really close but we new that they could do it! Then finally the game was over and they won!! We all went back to the hotel and we were screaming in the halls and running all over. We packed up our things and headed back to our house. When we were almost home we got a call telling us to go to the high school instead of going home right away!! When we got there they told us to wait outside and after waiting outside for 10 min. the team came in on the top of a fire truck blowing horns and yelling! They had the trophy and were all wearing blue and gold! Then we got to go inside to congratulate them. We went inside the gym and everyone was singing to a song that was playing!! It was We Are the Champions!! It was very excited and since my brother was in high school everyone knew me and was holding me up and hugging me because they were so excited. I don't think I will ever forget when the Ozaukee Warriors my hometown won the basketball game at state!

Volleyball

School volleyball just started and I am on the black team. Volleyball is really fun except that we have practice almost everyday! Our first volleyball game we lost but yesterday when I was sick, we won our game! I have never played volleyball before but I wanted to try it because it looks fun! So far volleyball is fun and I hope I get better at it!

Jack's Run

Have you ever heard of the Witness Protection Program? The Witness Protection Program is where families go if the witness a murder or a crime and the bad person is now after them. In the book Jack’s Run by Roland Smith the Osborne family has to go into the program because Jack’s father got arrested for drug trafficking and said that he was going to tell about all of his ex-bosses once he said that Alonzo Aznar knew that he had to do something to the family for the father not to say anything. Jack Osborne is very scared about what could happen to him and his family and I think I would feel the same way as he does!

Jack Osborne is scared about going into the Witness Protection Program because he doesn’t know where he is going and he doesn’t know if he can ever see his family and friends again. Jack has no clue where he is going or anything and he was scared. He didn’t get to say goodbye to anyone he new including the girl he has a crush on. Jack was really sad about leaving his crush and the only thing he could do was send her letter but she couldn’t send one back. I don’t think I could ever do what Jack Osborne has to do and leave my family and friends without saying goodbye or saying anything! I don’t think that I would be able to do that.

Would you be able to leave your family and friends on the spot without saying anything to them? I don’t think I would be able either at the end of Jack’s Run the Osborne family takes down Alonzo Aznar in a sneaky way that I would have never thought of. Jack Osborne was smart and grown-up about everything and in my opinion I think Jack saved the family and took down Alonzo Aznar!

The Circuit!

Have you ever had to leave your hometown and leave your friends? I have and I know that it is difficult to take everything in at once but once you meet people it isn’t hard at all. The main character in The Circuit by Francisco Jimenez is sad and nervous about moving but hopefully that changes!

I am like to the character are alike in many ways! One way that we are really alike is that we have both left are hometown and moved somewhere new. When I first heard that I was going to have to move I was really sad to find out that I had to leave all of my best friends. I think that the little boy in The Circuit felt the same way. He was sad, nervous and scared just like I was. Once you move, you find more friends and you fit in.

There are also a couple ways that I am different compared to the character. The most obvious difference is that I am a girl and he is a boy. I think that you can have a friend that is a boy or a girl. People think that if they are not the same gender as someone else that they can’t be there friend. One other difference is that we are different in age. Age doesn’t really matter if you are only a couple years apart.

I think that everyone should always try to make new friends. It is fun to find out more about people. When I moved here I went out for a soccer team. Everyone was nice but I really didn’t talk to anyone. Once I told them I was going to go to Pewaukee Jessie Bacon gave me a big hug. After that I knew I never wanted to leave. It was a fun experience moving and I think that the main character in the book will make friends too.

My new nephew!

On February 14, 2011 my new nephew Liam was born. He was 8 lb. 3 oz. and was 19 1/2 inches long. He is so cute. He already can open his eyes and he moves around a lot, but he is always sleeping. When ever I see him and get to hold him he is always asleep. One sad thing is since my brother is in the Air Force him and my sister in law and my new nephew will be moving to Las Vegas by May! It is very sad that they will not be here very long so I won't get to see him to often when he gets older but I can always go visit them!

Heidi and I are a like in many ways but we are also very different. In the

book Heidi was always happy and excited to do things with her grandpa that she

doesn’t see often. Since my grandparents live in Florida I don’t see them often

and when I see them I am happy and excited too. Also, we are alike because if I

was gone away from the people I’m use to being around I would get homesick. Heidi

gets homesick and lonesome when she is at her grandpa’s house. She gets depressed

and starts sleep walking. Heidi and I are alike in many ways but we are also very

different.

I am different compared to Heidi in many ways. The first big thing is that

Heidi is an orphan. I feel bad for people that are orphans because they do not get

the same lives that people that aren’t orphans do always. It would be different if

you were an orphan and not living with your real parents. Heidi and I are also

very different in age. It doesn’t really matter the age of somebody if they are a

good friend because even thought Heidi is five, I think she has a really good heart.

The book Heidi is very interesting and fun. It was one of the best books I

have ever read because I think it had a good meaning to it and people would real

enjoy to read this book. Heidi seems like she would be a girl that is tough and

brave. Bravery is something that most people think and say they have but they

really don’t.

Creative Circle Story

One day Sue was walking in the park when she saw a dog. She ran up to the dog and the dog tackled her. It started clawing at her face, she got all scratched up. She started crying and ran to her house. Her mom pointed and laughed, ha ha ha princess got you. Go princess go! Sue ran away, crying into a forest! Then, Po and the Furious Five from Kung Fu Panda appeared. She fainted unlucky her face landed on something in the grass. It was panda poop. She started crying and screaming because she thought it was so gross. She ran away and now will forever dislike dogs!

Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers are going to the superbowl this year and I am so happy! Since I have been alive the Packers have never won the superbowl so I am really happy to see them go. Today at school almost everyone wore Packers shirts and more. I hope the Packers win the superbowl because they might not go back to the superbowl for a couple more years!

Snow Days

Yesterday our school had a snow day. Today, Milwaukee Public schools had a snow day but we didn't I wish we had a snow day so that I could stay home again. If I stayed home I would probably have a friend over. If I had a friend over we could do so many fun things. Other snow days that we have had in the pass were so much fun. I love when we have snow days. Also something that is close to snow days are cold days. I don't think cold days are as much fun as snow days because you can't go outside unless you don't care if your cold. On snow days you can go outside and play in the snow and it won't be as cold as it would be if we had a snow day!

I hope we have a snow day

I hope that we don't have school tomorrow. If we had a snow day I think that I would go over to someones house. If I went to someones house I would probably go to my cousin's house. My cousin and I are always together because we get along so well. Also, I hope that we have a half of day today so that we can have even more time off of school. I hope that we have a snow day tomorrow so that we get to miss one day of school.

Deep Water

Jennie Igielski

I think the short story “Deep Water” is sad because of what the bully does. In the short story the bully in the book throws him into the deep end of the pool even though he can’t swim. I liked this short story but it made me sad when he couldn’t get to the surface and he was losing energy jumping up to get air.

The character in the short story and I are alike because I am afraid to do certain things in the water. We are mostly not alike because I love to swim and I can swim. Also, he almost drowned and I have never even come close to drowning anywhere.

Some of the things I like about the short story are that he survived and he didn’t drown. Some stories have sad endings like in the book The Pearl. If books have sad endings I don’t like to read the books. When stories have happy endings like if the main character survives if he is dying. Some of things I didn’t like about this short story is that there was a mean bully in it. I don’t like it when bullies think the other person will be fine even if they throw someone in the deep end of a pool and the other person can’t swim. He could have drowned because of the bully but good thing he didn’t.

The short story “Deep Waters” was a good story about how if you try you can do anything, like how he learned to swim even though he was afraid of pools, boats and most things that had to do with water. It was a sad short story in the middle when he was thrown in the pool and couldn’t swim. It was a very happy ending and I think books should always end with a happy ending.

The Pearl

Jennie Igielski
At the end of the book The Pearl by John Steinbeck Kino, Juana and Coyotito leave their town to escape and sell the pearl in a different town. On the way to sell the pearl Kino discovers trackers, one with a rifle. Kino had no choice and decided to go kill them all and take the rifle, but before he could he could attack the trackers heard Coyotito’s cry and decided to shoot up in the cave because they thought it was something else. Right when Kino attacked killing all of the men, the guy with the rifle shot and killing Coyotito. I liked the book The Pearl but I wished it would of ended a little differently.

If the ending was more interesting I wish it would have ended with Kino and Juana going into town and selling their pearl with Coyotito alive. I wished it would have ended this way because I like happy endings and with Coyotito dying and Kino throwing the pearl back into the ocean it did not make me happy. I would have enjoyed the book so much more if it ended with Coyotito being able to go to school.

Kino and Juana walked into town with Coyotito crying. Kino walked up to the pearl buyers.
“My pearl is worth so much more than you have offered me.” Kino says.

“Sir, this pearl is not the pearl of the world, but I can give you what I offered before.” The pearl buyer said.

“No, I know this pearl is worth so much more than your offering, I am not leaving until you at least tell me it is worth more!”

“Ok sir, you are right it is worth more than we are offering but it is worth too much that we cannot afford it!”

“I will make you a deal” Kino says “If you sing a paper saying you will pay me for my pearl I will let you pay me all you can right now and in the near future you will pay me the rest!”

“Yes sir, I will pay you all the money, if you give me the pearl right after I pay you as much as I can right now!”

“Ok it’s a deal” Kino says.

Kino and Juana were so happy. Their baby was now healthy and Coyotito will get to get to go to school and learn how to read and write. Kino and Juana got married also they got new clothes for them and Coyotito who was getting old enough to start going to school. Ever Since Kino sold the pearl of the world Kino, Juana and Coyotito have been the happiest family in town

The book, The Pearl was a good book but the ending made me dislike it. The ending was so sad and I always believe book endings should be happy. I think with Kino selling the pearl, the baby not dying and being able to go to school is a very happy ending and I wish it could have ended like that in the real book.

Will the pearl destroy the family?

Why does Juana believe the pearl will destroy her and Kino? How will the pearl destroy them? Give examples to support your opinion.

Juana believes that the pearl will destroy the family because people are going to try to steal it and it could put all of them in danger. When someone broke into to the family's house Juana was scared because Kino and Coyotito mean the world to Juana and it would be very bad if anything happened to any of them. The pearl could destroy the family because friends and neighbors will be jealous and might turn against them. Also people like the doctor are going to lie to them and try to get them to sell the pearl to them. Kino always thinks talks about what great things he will have for Coyotito but he is always scared that if things don't work out the way he plans the neighbors will think he was foolish to think it would ever work out. Kino has good hopes about the pearl but Juana wants to throw it away.
