There are many good short stories to read but I really liked the short story “The Hundredth Dove” by Jane Yolen. It has a very good purpose and ending but I think it should have ended a little differently. Even though I love the ending of this short story, if you would change it just a little bit it would be more interesting and more people would read it because everyone loves a happy ending.
At the end of the story the hunter twist the dove’s neck and then goes to the king to give him ninety-nine alive dove’s and one dead. I think this story has a great purpose and then ending is very good but I wish it would have been happier and enjoying for the reader to end on. By just changing little things in the story and by making the ending a little more enjoying more people will want to read this amazing short story.
Even though this short story is really good I wish it would end more interesting. Finally the hunter captures the hundredth dove! The one he could never catch he had in his arm. One arm around the dove and one had holding the dove’s neck. The dove could not move at all. The dove knew the hunter was not letting go so the dove spoke to the hunter.
“Master fowler set me free, gold and silver I’ll give thee”
But the hunter wasn’t going to fall for the dove’s little tricks.
“Master fowler set me free, fame and fortune follow thee”
Again the hunter was not going to fall for anything. The dove spoke for the third time.
“Master fowler fee this dove, the queen will be your won true love”
Then the hunter knew that this perfect, white dove was the queen. He set her free seeing if she really was the queen. The dove flew off and the hunter knew it was too good to be true. He sat there for about five minutes just thinking about what he was going to tell the King about how he failed him, but just then the queen showed up and became the hunters true love like she promised. The next day the hunter went up to the King.
“I have failed you.” Said the hunter “ you asked me for one hundred doves and I only brought you ninety-nine dove’s”
The King started crying.
“It is okay that you have failed me this once, the queen isn’t even going to show up”
After that the hunter told the King that he didn’t want to be a hunter anymore and he went home to his true love. They lived happily ever after.
Now I think that is a happy ending for the hunter. Just by changing a good, sad ending to a good, happy ending more people will want to read this short story. Some people do like sad endings but I don’t because if I am going to read a story I want it to end on a good note!
