Most women in the 1700s clean, cook, and take care of their family. However, the main character in "Soldier's Secret", Deborah Sampson, is not like most women. She didn't get an ordinary life like most women. She got a life she didn't ask for. What she wanted she didn't get at all; instead she got a life full of adventure, pain, and journeys.
In this book, Deborah has to make sacrifices just like the boy in the book "The Outsides" named Ponyboy. They both are very similar. Some examples are they both have to make sacrifices that affect them and the people around them very much. They both have to make life or death decisions that most people don't have to make at such a young age. Lastly they both don't really have a family. They both have to do things for them self and be very independent as a young adult.
I personally believe that there are more differences then similarities. One of the main differences is that Ponyboy is a boy and Deborah is a girl that disguises herself as a man. Also, their ages are very different because Ponyboy is about 14 and Deborah is about 18 so there is a big age difference. Deborah Sampson signed up for the war and fought for her country and in "The Outsiders" Ponyboy obviously doesn't go into the war!
There are so many similarities and differences between these two books that makes the book unique in its own way. It makes the book especially good for other readers. I think that both Deborah from the book "Soldier's Secret" and Ponyboy from the book "The Outsiders" are amazing characters in both of these books that are special in their own way.

Text Structure Response
In the book Soldier's Secret Deb who is servant for a family and loves watching the men training for the war outside her bedroom window. It always interested her on what it was like to be a man so when she finds Sam's old breeches she decides to try them on. When she tried them on they were the most comfortable pieces of clothing she has ever worn and she never wants to take them off. It is this moment where Deborah decides she wants to see what it was like to be a man and she wants to join the war.
One day when she was watching the men outside she decided to put the breeches on and practice like they do. She was amazing at it and thought that God was telling her something... God was telling her to disguise has a man and join the army to fight in the war. She tries signing up for the war but when someone recognizes the way she writes she has to make a run for it, so she decides to walk to Boston and sign up for the war there. She got to Boston, signed up, and began training for 2 weeks. After that there is no turning back. She finds that once she is in training she made a huge mistake and wishes she hadn't signed up for anything. She faints while marching, makes best friends that she wishes she could tell them that she was a woman, and falls in love with a man who knows she is a man but has second guesses by the way Deb acts. She regrets many things like signing up for the war and lying to everyone but she also has wishes. Her number one wish is to tell her love that she is a woman...

A College Drop Out
I had a dream when I was 12 that I was performing on Broadway. I was dancing and singing in a play and everyone was cheering for me. Every since that day I have wanted to perform on Broadway. In high school I would perform in school plays and sing in choir but it was never like my dream. My parents want me to grow up and be a lawyer because that is what they are but that is not my dream that is their dream for me.
Yesterday I dropped out of college but I have not told my parents yet... I am too scared. If they ever knew that I dropped out they would never talk to me again. Instead of driving home to my parents I decided to drive to New York for a couple days. It is only about an hour drive from my house. I think maybe going to New York I can see some performances and try-out for one or two.
I had to call my mom and let her know where I was and when I would be home. I told her I was staying on campus studying with a friend form my class and I would come home in 3 days... So that gives my 3 days so figure out something in New York. I am trying out for one play today and I think I might make one of the main parts because my competition isn't hard.

Point of View
Authors Note: In the book Soldier’s Secret, Deborah Sampson is the main character and she talks about her life and what happened to her. I always wonder it was like to be her best friend, Jennie, who is a slave at a house nearby were Deb works. Jennie always says how lucky Deb is that she is not a slave but you never get to hear Jennie’s point of view or her life.
I work in a big house as a slave. I get pushed around and beaten but I can’t do anything about it. I don’t know how to read or write or do anything so my best friend Deb wants to teach me. I don’t know if I really want her to teach me because if my master sees me knowing how to read or write he will know that I sneak away during lunch time. Deb is so sure that he won’t find out by I’m not sure she knows what she is talking about. I meet her in the woods every day during lunch time because my master never sees me or knows that I leave the house. Deb brings a book to the woods every day tries to teach me. I told her I am scared that my master will find out by she says her won’t so she teaches me anyways. Deb is very demanding and thinks she always right so I can’t say no to her… I’m too scared to.
One day Deb came up to me and told me a secret about how she watches the soldiers train in the morning, then practices what they do in her room. She also told me that she found Sam’s old breaches and that she put them on and she wondered what is was like to be a man. How you go treated compared to a woman? How much fun it is was to be free! She said that she put her hair put and went to town to see if anyone would notice her or if they would treat her differently. No one noticed her! I told her not to keep going out disguised but she didn’t listen and did it anyway. I don’t agree with what she is doing because it could get her killed… I told her that but she doesn’t thing anyone will notice her so she ignores me and what I say. I haven’t met her in the woods for a couple days so I don’t know if anything has happened to her. It scares me that I haven’t seen her because something could have happen like her be killed, get in trouble and be in jail or the worse one of all… have to go to war!

Creative Story!
"Are you crazy, it's four o'clock in the morning!" I screamed.
"No I am not crazy, you just need to get up so when can catch our plane to Florida!" My mother exclaimed.
"Okay" I said quietly.
I got up to get ready and help my parents pack up to the car. My little sister was still sleeping because my parents let her sleep but not me I guess. We packed up the car, woke up my sister and left for the airport. We got to the airport checked in, got on our plane and left for our family vacation to Orlando, Florida.
We got to Florida and went to our hotel. It was the biggest hotel I have ever been in! It had the biggest pool, the biggest rooms, and the best arcade.
