I think the short story “Deep Water” is sad because of what the bully does. In the short story the bully in the book throws him into the deep end of the pool even though he can’t swim. I liked this short story but it made me sad when he couldn’t get to the surface and he was losing energy jumping up to get air.
The character in the short story and I are alike because I am afraid to do certain things in the water. We are mostly not alike because I love to swim and I can swim. Also, he almost drowned and I have never even come close to drowning anywhere.
Some of the things I like about the short story are that he survived and he didn’t drown. Some stories have sad endings like in the book The Pearl. If books have sad endings I don’t like to read the books. When stories have happy endings like if the main character survives if he is dying. Some of things I didn’t like about this short story is that there was a mean bully in it. I don’t like it when bullies think the other person will be fine even if they throw someone in the deep end of a pool and the other person can’t swim. He could have drowned because of the bully but good thing he didn’t.
The short story “Deep Waters” was a good story about how if you try you can do anything, like how he learned to swim even though he was afraid of pools, boats and most things that had to do with water. It was a sad short story in the middle when he was thrown in the pool and couldn’t swim. It was a very happy ending and I think books should always end with a happy ending.

The Pearl
Jennie Igielski
At the end of the book The Pearl by John Steinbeck Kino, Juana and Coyotito leave their town to escape and sell the pearl in a different town. On the way to sell the pearl Kino discovers trackers, one with a rifle. Kino had no choice and decided to go kill them all and take the rifle, but before he could he could attack the trackers heard Coyotito’s cry and decided to shoot up in the cave because they thought it was something else. Right when Kino attacked killing all of the men, the guy with the rifle shot and killing Coyotito. I liked the book The Pearl but I wished it would of ended a little differently.
If the ending was more interesting I wish it would have ended with Kino and Juana going into town and selling their pearl with Coyotito alive. I wished it would have ended this way because I like happy endings and with Coyotito dying and Kino throwing the pearl back into the ocean it did not make me happy. I would have enjoyed the book so much more if it ended with Coyotito being able to go to school.
Kino and Juana walked into town with Coyotito crying. Kino walked up to the pearl buyers.
“My pearl is worth so much more than you have offered me.” Kino says.
“Sir, this pearl is not the pearl of the world, but I can give you what I offered before.” The pearl buyer said.
“No, I know this pearl is worth so much more than your offering, I am not leaving until you at least tell me it is worth more!”
“Ok sir, you are right it is worth more than we are offering but it is worth too much that we cannot afford it!”
“I will make you a deal” Kino says “If you sing a paper saying you will pay me for my pearl I will let you pay me all you can right now and in the near future you will pay me the rest!”
“Yes sir, I will pay you all the money, if you give me the pearl right after I pay you as much as I can right now!”
“Ok it’s a deal” Kino says.
Kino and Juana were so happy. Their baby was now healthy and Coyotito will get to get to go to school and learn how to read and write. Kino and Juana got married also they got new clothes for them and Coyotito who was getting old enough to start going to school. Ever Since Kino sold the pearl of the world Kino, Juana and Coyotito have been the happiest family in town
The book, The Pearl was a good book but the ending made me dislike it. The ending was so sad and I always believe book endings should be happy. I think with Kino selling the pearl, the baby not dying and being able to go to school is a very happy ending and I wish it could have ended like that in the real book.

Will the pearl destroy the family?
Why does Juana believe the pearl will destroy her and Kino? How will the pearl destroy them? Give examples to support your opinion.
Juana believes that the pearl will destroy the family because people are going to try to steal it and it could put all of them in danger. When someone broke into to the family's house Juana was scared because Kino and Coyotito mean the world to Juana and it would be very bad if anything happened to any of them. The pearl could destroy the family because friends and neighbors will be jealous and might turn against them. Also people like the doctor are going to lie to them and try to get them to sell the pearl to them. Kino always thinks talks about what great things he will have for Coyotito but he is always scared that if things don't work out the way he plans the neighbors will think he was foolish to think it would ever work out. Kino has good hopes about the pearl but Juana wants to throw it away.
