Deep Water

Jennie Igielski

I think the short story “Deep Water” is sad because of what the bully does. In the short story the bully in the book throws him into the deep end of the pool even though he can’t swim. I liked this short story but it made me sad when he couldn’t get to the surface and he was losing energy jumping up to get air.

The character in the short story and I are alike because I am afraid to do certain things in the water. We are mostly not alike because I love to swim and I can swim. Also, he almost drowned and I have never even come close to drowning anywhere.

Some of the things I like about the short story are that he survived and he didn’t drown. Some stories have sad endings like in the book The Pearl. If books have sad endings I don’t like to read the books. When stories have happy endings like if the main character survives if he is dying. Some of things I didn’t like about this short story is that there was a mean bully in it. I don’t like it when bullies think the other person will be fine even if they throw someone in the deep end of a pool and the other person can’t swim. He could have drowned because of the bully but good thing he didn’t.

The short story “Deep Waters” was a good story about how if you try you can do anything, like how he learned to swim even though he was afraid of pools, boats and most things that had to do with water. It was a sad short story in the middle when he was thrown in the pool and couldn’t swim. It was a very happy ending and I think books should always end with a happy ending.
